Baptism

Through baptism a person is brought fully into the family of God. When someone professes faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the water of baptism represents a spiritual cleansing of that person. We baptize people old enough to decide for themselves to make the commitment to follow Jesus, and infants and younger children whose parents make that same commitment on their behalf.

The occasion of a baptism is a cause for the whole church to celebrate. That’s why baptisms are not private events but normally happen during Sunday services, so the whole congregation can participate. Our expectation is that people being baptized be active in the congregation. Occasionally someone who grew up at St. John’s but who now lives elsewhere wants their child baptized at St. John’s. In that case, the expectation is that the family be active in a church of their own.
